SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY
(Email Debbie Swain)

Program Description

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are an integral part of the medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.

A surgical technologist posses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

This program provides clinical experience built upon classroom instruction in the basic sciences, patient care, aseptic techniques and surgical procedures. Students enrolled in the Surgical Technology Program are required to achieve a minimum grade of "C" in each Surgical Technology course. Graduates from this program are eligible to take the certifying exam from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Surgical Technology Program is to provide students the opportunity through didactic and clinical instruction that will enable individuals to perform as competent, entry-level Surgical Technologists. This will be accomplished by preparing competent graduates in the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains.

Work Policy:

A student is free to work during times that do not interfere with classroom or clinical hours or requirements.  However, it is strongly recommended that work hours not exceed 20 hours per week, and that hours are not on the night shift prior to a school day. Students are NOT allowed to be used as Substitutes for Surgery Staff during clinicals.

Past experience has shown that it is difficult for students to maintain a “C” average while employed full-time. At no time will work be an excuse for missed assignments, lack of alertness, absences, or tardiness.

It is the policy of West Kentucky Community and Technical College Surgical Technology Program and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) that students cannot be substituted for paid personnel during the Clinical Portion of the program.
