DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY
(E-mail Nichole Toon or Alice Robertson)

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at West Kentucky Community & Technical College is a full-time career program designed to prepare students for entry level employment in diagnostic ultrasound. Concentrations include vascular; abdomen and OB/GYN. The program includes both classroom work and clinical education in an affiliated Ultrasound Department.

A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a highly-skilled professional who uses specialized equipment to create images of structures inside the human body that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. Sectional anatomy, ultrasonic instrumentation and imaging are the major components in this program. Skills are developed through clinical experiences using diagnostic imagery equipment. Some clinical sites may require criminal background investigation and/or drug testing prior to or at the beginning of the clinical assignment. Clinical assignments will not be based on whether or not a clinical facility requires background or drug tests.

Employment opportunities exist in hospital ultrasound departments, clinics, mobile services and physicians’ offices. Program graduates will find career opportunities locally, regionally, or nationally. The program is accredited by CAAHEP.

Transcripts listing post-secondary Allied Health education must be submitted for verification of prerequisite courses. (Applicant may be asked for course description to clarify course content.) Admission to the program is based on a point system that includes your ACT or Compass test grade and your GPA from the prerequisites required for the program.
