CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK AND
DRUG SCREENING REQUIREMENTS
In order to be admitted to off-campus clinical affiliate sites, a criminal
background investigation and drug screening is required. This will be
done at the student’s expense.
Students will be provided a
schedule that will include a window of time during which the
background investigation and drug screening must occur, and the deadline
for results to be received by program officials. In some instances it
may be necessary to undergo the background investigation and drug screening
more than once, at the students expense, during the program.
Drug screenings will be performed by Occunet. The
initial screening is $45, payable by cash, credit or debit card, certified
check, or money order only. No personal checks will be accepted. Occunet
will offer any subsequent screenings required during the student’s
continuous enrollment in the program at a discounted price of $40. This
does not include second screenings due to invalid samples or positive
results. Occunet is located at 2535 Broadway in Paducah, KY. Their
hours of operation are 7:30am – 5:00pm. You must arrive no
later than 4:30pm to be screened. You will be asked to present a
photo identification. If you are taking any prescription medication
at the time of the screening you will need to bring a copy of the prescription
or the container of the medication with the prescription label intact
with you to Occunet. You will be asked to sign a release allowing
Occunet to provide the results of the screening to the program
coordinator.
What if the results of the drug screening are
positive?
In the event that a student receives a positive
result, he/she will be offered the opportunity to have a second
analysis. This analysis will be conducted on urine from the original specimen
provided by the student. A second analysis does not mean the
student will provide a second sample. This second analysis, while
coordinated by Occunet, is actually performed by an independent laboratory. The
cost of the second analysis, approximately $200, is the student’s
responsibility. The
results from a second analysis must be received by the program
coordinator by the original stated deadline. If a student submits
an invalid sample for screening, he/she will be asked by Occunet to
remain in the facility and provide a second observed sample. If a student
refuses to do this the screening for which the invalid sample was submitted
will be considered a positive result. If a student fails to provide
negative results from the initial or second screening within
the prescribed window of time and by the deadline date, in accordance
with Section 5.3.9 of the KCTCS Code of Student Conduct, the
student will be dropped from the program. The student may reapply
to the program according to the program’s re-admission policies. Re-admission
is not guaranteed.
A background investigation from the county
and state of the college and the county and state of the student’s
permanent residence will also be required to be submitted by the same
deadline date as the drug screening. Background
investigations for Kentucky residents may be obtained through
CourtNet at http://courts.ky.gov/aoc/courtservices/recordsandstatistics/records.htm#forms. The
cost of this investigation is $10.
Students who are out-of-state
residents must provide an investigation from Sentry Link, instead
of CourtNet, at https://www.sentrylink.com/web/loadCriminalReport.do?WE.srch=1. Cost
of this investigation is $19.95.
What if the background check prohibits the student from attending
a clinical facility?
Students whose background check includes an event
that prohibits them from attending a specific clinical rotation
will be unable to complete the clinical experience and will be
dropped from the program. Failure to submit the background check by the
stated deadline will also result in dismissal from the program.
In some
instances a clinical affiliate may require a student to undergo
a drug screening and or criminal background check provided by that particular
affiliate in addition to any previous drug screening(s) and background
investigation(s) the student may have undergone. These will be performed
during a prescribed window of time and subject to a pre-determined deadline. The
policy for the results of these screenings/investigations is
the same as above.
