Application Process

The next Medical Asssisting Program will begin Fall 2009.
  1. Application for admission to the College.
  2. Official high school transcript indicating that the applicant has completed an approved 4-year high school curriculum or the GED certificate. (Not required if the applicant has a college transcript on file.)
  3. Official transcripts of all postsecondary education or training.
  4. Official ACT or Compass score reports. Minimum scores for admission to the program are:
    ACT - 18, or Compass Reading - 76, Writing - 57, and Pre-algebra - 34.
  5. Documentation of attendance at a Medical Assisting Pre-Admission Conference.
  6. Background and drug testing may be required prior to or at the beginning of a clinical assignment.
  7. It is strongly recommended that a computer literacy course be completed prior to admission to the program.
  8. All documentation must be submitted by May 1, 2009.

Selective Admission Criteria

As the Medical Assisting Program usually has more qualified applicants than positions in the program, a Selective Admissions Process is used. The criteria used include:

(1) ACT or COMPASS Test Scores    

ACT (Composite Score)
18-19 = 10pts
20-21 = 12pts
22-23 = 14pts
24-25 = 16pts
26+ = 18pts

OR

COMPASS (Reading, Writing, Pre-Algebra)
R=76    W=57    Pre-Algebra=34 = 10pts
R=81    W=75    Pre-Algebra=41 = 12pts
R=81    W=75    Algebra=16-29 = 14pts
R=81    W=75    Algebra=30-34 = 16pts
R=81    W=75    Algebra=35+ = 18pts

2. The applicant's cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better in 10 or more credit hours of college work applicable to the credential.

2.5 = 4 points
2.8 = 5 points
3.0 = 6 points
3.2 = 7 points
3.5 = 8 points
3.8 = 9 points
4.0 = 10 points

3. The applicant's Anatomy and Physiology grade.

A = 5 points
B = 3 points
C = 1 point

4. The applicant's Medical Terminology grade.

A = 5 points
B = 3 points
C = 1 point

5. The applicant's Introduction to Computers grade.

A = 5 points
B = 3 points
C = 1 point

Final applicant selections, having duplicate totals, will be determined by applicant's cumulative GPA.
