PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

This innovative approach to dental auxiliary education will provide an avenue of instruction for students at three different sites located throughout Western Kentucky.

This will enable students at each of those sites to receive an equally well-rounded education in their chosen discipline. Some of the ways that this process will be accomplished include:

1. Distance Learning. Instructors will be able to provide educational materials to students by way of instructional television. Lectures and demonstrations can be sent to each site this way, giving the students the opportunity to learn with their classmates as well as with the students at the other sites.

Participating Sites: West Kentucky Community & Technical College, Henderson Community College and Elizabethtown Community & Technical College.

2. Combined learning experiences for the dental assisting and dental hygiene students. Six of the courses required for completion of the dental assisting program and the dental hygiene program have been identified as being so similar in nature that they can easily be integrated into either program.

3. Fewer numbers of students at each site. The number of students accepted into the programs at each site is:

West Kentucky Community & Technical College

12 Dental Assisting

4 Dental Hygiene

Henderson Community College

4 Dental Assisting

4-6 Dental Hygiene

Elizabethtown Community & Technical College

6 Dental Assisting

4 Dental Hygiene

This will provide a lower student-to-faculty ratio, allowing more personal interaction with the faculty.

4. Using community professional resources to gain an understanding of the principles of dental practice. Dental professionals in each community will be utilized to give students the opportunity to experience the various ways in which dental treatment is delivered. Adjunct faculty, office visits, and guest lecturers are just some of the ways the student will acquire knowledge about dental care delivery, all with the common goal of providing the best quality of dental care possible.
